After a year of waiting, the 2025 edition of the Oscars are finally here, with Hollywood’s A-listers set to be recognised for their performances over the past twelve months.

Returning for its 97th edition, many will be staying up late to see if anything crazy happens like the wrong winner being announced or a slap being heard around the world.

Whether you’re a film fanatic or someone who just goes to the cinema for the popcorn, there’s something in this year’s Oscars for everyone.

When and where are the Oscars?

This year’s recognition of the best films of the year will be held on Sunday, March 2, at 12 am GMT (7 pm EDT) at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The stars tend to begin rolling out on the red carpet two hours before the ceremony gets underway.

Those in the UK who want to stay up to see who the big winners are, can watch the ceremony live on ITV1 and ITVX. Presented by Jonathan Ross, ITV’s coverage will begin at 10.30pm and will also air on STV and STV Player in Scotland.

Netflix’s musical Emilia Pérez leads the pack with a staggering 13 nominations, just one behind the record of 14 that is shared by Titanic, All About Eve, and La La Land. However, the former Best Picture frontrunner is unlikely to break any records after its Oscar campaign was somewhat derailed by a series of offensive tweets resurfacing from its lead Karla Sofía Gascón’s X account.

Three-and-a-half historical epic The Brutalist and Wicked have ten nominations each, with the former’s lead Adrien Brody the favourite to win Best Actor. Voters may want to wait until Wicked’s 2025 sequel to give it the big awards, but the Wizard of Oz musical is likely to bring home awards for makeup, hairstyling and costumes.

The current favourite to win Best Picture is Anora, with the Sean Baker tale about a US stripper winning the Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture and the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing.

One film that might pull off some major shocks on the night is Conclave. The British film that follows Ralph Fiennes as he attempts to elect a new Pope recentely won Best Film at the BAFTAs. Also expected to be a winner is The Substance, with Demi Moore tipped to win her first Oscar for the body-horror flic.

Who is hosting?

Conan O’Brien will be taking over from Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted the last two ceremonies and four in total. After going without a host from 2019 to 2021, the Oscars has reverted back to beginning with an opening monalogue.

Teasing what to expect from his Oscars, former US talk-show host Conan told Good Morning America: “I’m just going to keep popping in and just yell, ‘Host’.

“Like during someone’s emotional speech when they’ve just won and they’re saying a beautiful thing about their grandmother who believed in them, and I lean in, ‘Host!’ Jarring. Upsetting. Probably a bad idea.”

Who are presenting the awards?

With 23 awards to present on the night, the following actors will be reading out the winners: Joe Alwyn, Dave Bautista, Halle Berry, Sterling K. Brown, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Ana de Armas, Lily-Rose Depp, Robert Downey Jr., Elle Fanning, Harrison Ford, Gal Gadot, Andrew Garfield, Whoopi Goldberg, Selena Gomez, Goldie Hawn, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, John Lithgow. Cillian Murphy, Connie Nielsen, Amy Poehler, Margaret Qualley, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Alba Rohrwacher, Zoe Saldaña, June Squibb, Ben Stiller, Emma Stone, Oprah Winfrey, Bowen Yang and Rachel Zegler.

Who is performing?

After years of the Best Song nominees performing during the Oscars, this year is moving away from the tradition in favour of a mix of musicians doing what they do best. The highlight of which may be Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s performance of the biggest hits from Wicked.

While Doja Cat and Blackpink’s LISA sure to bring the energy, UK eyes will on rising star Raye as she performs in front of her biggest global audience to date. Additionally, Queen Latifah will be performing a tribute to the late Quincy Jones.
