The L’Essor Aigles struck gold in eight weight classes at the WECSSAA wrestling championships.

The Aigles got gold-medal efforts on the girls’ side from Tyler Mackenzie (38kg), Taylor Quenneville (51kg), Esme Berton (54kg), Briannah Dumouchelle (61kg) and Angela Derbyshire (95 kg) while Julien Valcourt (51kg), Gatlin Reilly (72kg) and Christian Anderson (77kg) won on the boys’ side.

The Assumption Purple Raiders produced four individual champions as Amir Karimi (95kg) won the boys’ side with Mimi Okeke (67.5kg), Charisa Okeke (72kg) and Daniella Papia (77kg) taking gold on the girls’ side.

Meanwhile, the Lajeunesse Royals, Massey Mustangs and Vista Academy Vortex each produced three individual champions.

The Royals got gold-medal performances from Aaden Setterington (57.5 kg) on the boys’ side and Ava Setterington (41kg) and Jenn Hawkins (47.5kg) on the girls’ side.

The Mustangs saw Ali Syed (54kg) and Mohammad Abdel-Raheem (67.5kg) win gold on the boys’ side and Aamina Ajaz (44kg) on the girls’ side.

All three Vortex gold medals came on the boys’ side from Josh Gerard (44kg), Billy Hansor (47.5 kg) and Hayden Ingle-Barton (83kg).

The Belle River Nobles’ Camden Gerard (41kg) and Lucas Kreiter (130kg plus) won gold on the boys’ side while the Riverside Stingers’ Rishona Gurung (57.5kg) and Mariah Mixon (83kg) won on the girls’ side.

Other gold-medal performances on the boys’ side went to the Essex Red Raiders’ Jacob Sutton (38kg), the Holy Names Knights’ Ronald Adogah (130kg), the Kennedy Clippers’ Jay Laird (89kg), the Sandwich Sabres’ Zayd Abdelrazzaq (64kg) and the Villanova Wildcats’ Francesco Lapico (61kg). The St. Anne Saints’ Grayson Roberts (64kg) and the St. Joseph Lasers’ Jacklyn Iacoboni (115kg) also won gold on the girls’ side.

Saints women’s volleyball

The St. Clair Saints’ Geveva Huisman was named the OCAA’s West Division player of the year in women’s volleyball.

A third-year middle hitter, Huisman, who is a Maranatha Christian Academy product, was second in the division with 3.3 kills per set and topped the division with a .412 kill percentage while finishing third with 4.3 points per set and second with .67 blocks per set. Huisman also became just the fourth St. Clair player named a CCAA All-Canadian while also earning a West Division first-team all-star nod.

Second-year outside hitter Brianne Hobbin and third-year outside hitter Haleigh Kearns earned West Division second-team all-star honours.

Lakeshore hosts qualifier

Skate Lakeshore is set to host its first Provincial Series competition from Friday through Sunday at the Atlas Tube Centre.

The event, which is geared at high level competitors of Star 5 plus, will serve as a qualifier for the Skate Ontario Provincial Championships.

Admission to the event is $7 per person or $5 with a donation of a non-perishable item for the local Community Support Centre.
