Crystal Palace vs Chelsea LIVE: Premier League score and updates as Blues hope to end poor run

Crystal Palace play host to Chelsea in the Premier League with the aim of building off a 2-1 victory over Southampton.
Palace, who sit 15th in the league table, are in need of more consistency and a win over their London rivals will aid their pursuit of distancing themselves from a relegation battle.
In contrast, Chelsea hope to get themselves back in the title race after a run of disappointing results to end 2024. The Blues are on a three-game winless run after a draw against Everton was followed up with defeats to Fulham and Ipswich.
Chelsea are down to fourth and sit 10 points behind Liverpool at the top of the table. The points were shared in the reverse fixture back in September, but Chelsea had won the previous 14 meetings between the teams.

Looking to the second half, Palace need to focus on turning their attacks into actual chances. Munoz has had a bit of space on the right but has had no options inside the box to pick out. That is just one example of how they could do better, and Oliver Glasner will be going into detail inside the changing rooms right now. For Chelsea, it will be more of the same as they head into the second half. They could have and should have been further ahead, so if they continue making chances then you would expect another to be put away.

Chelsea are ahead at the break thanks to a Palmer goal in the 14th minute. The game began with a heavy load of Chelsea pressure, with them unable to find an even earlier breakthrough than they eventually did. Palace weathered the storm, but a few minutes after calming the game down, Sancho found Palmer with a moment of space inside the Palace box. Palmer didn’t hesitate to shoot, and he found the back of the net with a left-footed shot that beat Henderson down to his left. Palace picked up after the goal, and have threatened with some good-looking attacks, but they have failed to create any big chances as of yet. Chelsea, however, have and they have Jackson to blame for why they’re not further ahead. He missed a great chance in the 39th minute but shot wide. The Opta live win probability says there is a 9.5% chance of a Palace win, 19.6% for a draw and a 70.8% chance of a Chelsea win. So far, Palace have created 0.11xG, which is overshadowed by Chelsea’s 0.88xG.

We are heading towards the break now, can Palace find an equaliser before half-time that they have been threatening, or can Chelsea add to their advantage?
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:44
The shot goes straight into the Chelsea wall, and the game continues with Chelsea in possession. As you were.

15:42
Caicedo commits a foul on the edge of his own box, giving Palace a chance as we near half-time. Eze is over it.

15:40
HUGE CHANCE! Jackson went through again after a sublime pass from Palmer. He stood up Lacroix before attempting a shot with the outside of his foot, which went wide! He should’ve done better there, Jackson.
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:39
Palace are now putting on a fair bit of pressure! They had the ball in and around the Chelsea box for a few minutes, as the attacks ended with Eze poking a high shot at Sanchez.

15:36
CLOSE! Mateta shoots wide! Munoz picked up the ball on the right and sent a ball back to Mateta on the edge of the box. The striker hit it first time and sent it spinning inches wide of the left post. Better from Palace.
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:35
Some trouble at the back for Palace as Henderson played a very stray pass, that went in the direction of the corner flag! It was quickly amended, and Chelsea have won the ball back in their half.
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:33
Palmer has created three chances in this game, more than any other player (ahead of Neto – one chance). Just a reminder that we are only in the 31st minute.

15:30
CHANCE! Acheampong arrives at the back post and meets Palmer’s corner, but his downward header goes wide of the post and his chance for a Premier League goal passes him by!
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:28
Chelsea are doing a really good job in midfield to contain any potential through balls that Palace conjure up. Most of the passes up to Mateta and co. have been lofted, and have been dealt with by Colwill.

15:27
Interestingly, despite not worrying Sanchez in goal, most of the play has been in the Chelsea third in the last five minutes. Perhaps a small sign of Palace growing into the game.
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:25
Chelsea look in total control of this game already, and Palace don’t look like they will threaten them much, going off the opening 25 minutes or so. The home team haven’t had a proper sight of goal yet.
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:23
Palace had a chance to break through Eze, but his final touch before looking to get a shot away was heavy, and the attack fizzled out after as none of his team mates could take over.

15:20
Jackson is fouled by Lacroix, which presents Chelsea with a free-kick situation, around 30 yards out from the goal. Palmer and Fernandez are over it.

15:19
That’s a poor start to the game by Palace, they weathered the initial Chelsea storm but then had a lapse in concentration and they now find themselves a goal behind.

Even though we are still in the early parts of this game, it looks to be a very open affair. As soon as one team’s attack breaks down, the other wastes no time in building one of their own. It feels like a Tennis match with how much the players are up and down the pitch.
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:13
The game has calmed down slightly now as Palace enjoy a period of sustained possession. They needed a breather after that quick start from Chelsea.
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:12
What a tackle that was from Richards! Jackson was played clean through on the right side of the box, but as he was about to pull the trigger, a big sliding tackle came in from the American.
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:09
Chelsea already look very dangerous inside the opening 10 minutes. They are going forward at each opportunity and look likely to score every time.
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:08
Chelsea got themselves two corners in quick succession after Fernandez’s first attempt was cleared away at the front post. Palmer took the second set-piece, but a big header from the Palace defence meant the danger was cleared.
Crystal Palace vs Chelsea
15:05
The first shot of the game goes Chelsea’s way and it’s Sancho who sends his shot flying a long way over the bar on the volley.

Crystal Palace have failed to pick up points in their opening game of a calendar year since 2021, when they beat Sheffield United 2-0. They are up against a hungry Chelsea side here, so that record may continue for another year.

Will Hughes picked up a foot injury last time out against Southampton, so he is unavailable for selection. Adam Wharton has had another setback to his return, so Doucoure slots into midfield alongside Lerma. Trevoh Chalobah is unable to play against his parent club, so Richards retains his play in defence alongside Guehi, who captains the side. For Chelsea, there are plenty of changes to talk about as Maresca shakes things up after their recent loss. Sancho, Neto and Jackson all return to start in attack as they replace Felix, Nkunku and Madueke respectively. Acheampong and Gusto start side-by-side on the right side of the defence, and Fernandez captains the side.

As for Enzo Maresca’s side, they were flying in the Premier League until a few gameweeks ago. They are now winless in three Premier League games, where they faced Everton, Fulham and Ipswich. The last on that list was Chelsea’s most recent fixture, and they lost 2-0 to the newly promoted Suffolk side. Liam Delap provided a goal and assist in the first half to secure all three points for Ipswich, with no reply. Chelsea will want to use this game as a way to get their form back on track against a side that they historically love playing against.

Oliver Glasner’s team has begun to find some much-needed form after a start to the season that halted their progress. Their most recent game was a 2-1 win against bottom-of-the-table Southampton and those three points meant that Palace provisionally moved up to 15th in the league. The pressure on them has eased somewhat, and now they have breathing space between them and the bottom three. With a win against Chelsea, they could move as high as 13th in the Premier League, but they know it won’t be easy.

The last time these sides faced each other in the Premier League, the game ended 1-1 back in September 2024! Eberechi Eze scored shortly after half-time to level up the score, as Nicolas Jackson had put the home team ahead after 25 minutes. The overall head-to-head record between the two sides is not pretty reading for the side from South London, with only four wins out of the last 25 meetings. Chelsea have won 20 of those and will look to add another one here, as they haven’t lost to Crystal Palace in the previous 15 meetings.
